Feherty, ya gotta love him…

This is a letter that our beloved DF wrote to Tie Domi a few years back.

Just funny.

Get well soon David, we miss you on air.

boomer.

It’s almost that time of year once more. Memories of winter are shrinking, but for me, I see only ice. That’s right, it’s almost time for the Stanley Cup playoffs. Regular readers know how much I love hockey, and that I have a few friends who play, or used to play. The great Ron Francis, Paul Coffey, Tony McKegney, to name a few…well, to name them all actually, or at least I thought so until just the other day, when I had to write a letter of apology to a player I’ve never even met. I’m talking about the Toronto Maple Leaf’s Tie Domi.

Confused? Not as badly as I was, but the following letter to the NHL’s version of the Tasmanian Devil is fairly self-explanatory:

Dear Tie:

As our mutual friend Tony McKegney may or may not have told you, I am an idiot.

However, my own tremendous standards in this area rocketed upwards at a hell of a rate when recently, I made the startling discovery that one of the signed photographs on the wall of my office was of you, and not (as I had thought for the previous year) of the aforementioned McKegney.

Now even by my standards, this is a staggering piece of stupidity, and for at least five reasons:

  1. The inscription on the photo reads, “To David, all my best, Tie Domi.” (To some, this might have been a hint, although in my own defense here, you could be called for hooking, slashing, and off-side for your signature, although it does appear possible that you might have been tripped in the act of writing it.)
  2. Tony McKegney is a big, bandy-legged black guy.
  3. You’re not.
  4. You’re insane.
  5. Okay, you got me on this one. Tony’s insane too. To play hockey for a living, you have to be.

This whole sordid affair is made stranger still by the fact that McKegney and I are related. I have no idea how this happened, but until I met him, I thought I was black Irish. Anyway, he read in one of my pieces somewhere that I was interested in hockey, E-mailed me, telling me of the link between our families, and we became kind of on-line buddies. Tony is friendly with Mike Weir, and last year he came to the Masters. We arranged to meet in a bar behind the Augusta National. I still had no idea that he was black, but I spotted that, and the trademark Feherty/McKegney nose almost instantly the minute he introduced himself. I’m not THAT slow.

A friend of mine from Toronto was visiting me the other day, and he remarked upon your image, “Hey, nice photo of Tie Domi. I didn’t know you knew him!”

I told him I didn’t know Tie Domi, and that he was looking at a photo of Tony McKegney. “It’s just a reflection off the ice, or a trick of the light or something,” I muttered. But those Toronto people aren’t so easily fooled. Most of the bastards know you.

Subsequently, Tony told me he had asked you to send the photo about a year or so ago, around the same time he had sent me one of himself, but he didn’t realize that you had done so. Obviously he didn’t tell me. I’m thrilled to have your picture on my wall though, and I wanted to write to thank you, and explain why my letter took so long! You must have thought I was a bigger asshole than I thought you were, and I was wrong about that. Since I’ve realized you are watching me as I write, I’ve taken the time to visit your web site, and find out a little more about you. When you’re not beating the crap out of adults, you manage to find the time to look after an enormous number of less than fortunate kids. Thanks for doing that, and thank you so much for signing and sending your photo to me. It’s one that I will treasure.

Please accept a copy of my book, with kindest regards from one of your brethren. I’m sending you a photo, too, although it was taken from a strange angle, and I think it makes me look a little like Vijay Singh.

Good luck in the playoffs. Toronto has a new fan.

The Big Easy Makes It Look That Way [Even Though It Ain't]

So a big congrats to one of my all-time favourites in Ernie Els for wrapping up the Honda Classic today. THC is a pretty decent event, and Ernie hadn’t won anything in something like three and a half years. It’s had to have been tough, having all that talent and having had injuries and an “off” game hold him back.

I’ve always admired Els. Not only is it nice to see a guy win after such a long dry spell, he’s also an accessible and easy-going character on camera. It’s hard not to like him. For me, though, it goes a little further: I think of his swing when I’m working on improving my own. That why Ernie’s something of an inspiration for me personally, because there’s a guy who’s pretty much my size that I can really see guidance within the swing of. I swing slowly in a wide, slow arc, and while I’m told my tempo is good I just can’t seem to find the athleticism I feel I need in golf. If I haven’t mentioned it before, I grind at golf – nothing comes naturally – and almost every round seems a struggle. Els makes it look easy, and if it makes any sense, I draw some very real and palpable hope from watching him. His athleticism is a quiet athleticism, if that makes any sense, and if I could find that same spirit within myself in any modicrum at all I’m sure I’d improve noticeably. Ernie’s my guy to watch, and the player who makes me think I could play better.

The season’s already started out west, where Kelowna’s got 10 degree weather right now. I’m itching to get out there with my hope and my quest for my own “quiet athleticism”… and yes, even knowing my frustration level will sometimes be high. I itch for golf in a way that I never itched for hockey season, baseball season or football season when I was a kid. Golf’s something I know I can do, and something that makes me think that breakthrough I need is just around the next Par 5.

I come into this season with a [sigh] 20 handicap. I hope buckling down, reaching within, studying the pros and taking some serious lessons from both a CPGA pro and Boomer himself will knock that down significantly. Yours Truly is tired of floating around 95-100 at the end of a round, and wants to break 90 consistently by the end of the year. I didn’t want it enough last year. Watching Ernie today has re-inpsired me to focus this season, and that’s all changed.

Trying to keep it out of the long grass,

BC & Boomer at the TELUS World Skins Game

I had forgotten to mention that Boomer and I attended day two of the TELUS World Skins Game at The Raven at Lora Bay last week [Dennis was also to attend, but got lost and spent seven hours in the car before turning around and going home]. John Daly, Retief Goosen, Stephen Ames, Geoff Ogilvy and Colin Montgomerie battled it out around the course, with Daly chipping in for eagle to win $220,000 and the championship. It was an extremely intimate setting to be involved in – these guys are ten feet away from you sometimes – and we got up-close looks at their drives, fairway shots and putting strokes. I don’t think I really had much of an appreciation for just how *good* these guys are before seeing them up-close.

The best part of the day was a conversation, though, between Boom-Boom and Colin Montgomerie. It went like so:

KEVIN [at the ropes, holding out a "Montgomerie- Dubai" hat for him to sign]: Colin! Read the hat!

MONTY [reading it]: Ahh, that’s nice to see! Have you played there?

KEVIN: Yes! I used to be a member.

MONTY: What happened?

KEVIN: I came back here. But I’m going back.

MONTY: Good! I need your money!

Laughter all around and good times had by all. Stephen Ames also signed my hat, which was nice, while Daly passed over signing my John Daly driver head cover a couple of times.  Again, the intimacy is high at these things, and I would definitely go back and see it again. $75 seems a little steep, but you’d play twice that to play at The Raven anyhow, and it’s a rare occassion to see PGA golfers up close and personal. It’s a great day, and very enjoyable.

Back To Our Roots: Cresthaven

I played a very enjoyable round today at, of all places, Cresthaven.

If you’re not familiar with it, Cresthaven is the redheaded stepchild of golf courses: it’s a first-come, first-serve par 3 that once caused me to walk off due to bumpy greens that you couldn’t putt on due to the fact that whoever did the airation that fall left all of the dirt bits behind for us to putt around. On the upside, it costs $26, so there you are – you get what you pay for.

This time around, however, the greens were soft and relatively true, the fairways were green and a great time was had by all. Par is 54 there, obviously, and Dennis “Pinecone” Davis shot a 74 while yours truly hit a 69. Having moved on two years ago to middle-class courses like Parkview – and, thanks to Boom-Boom, moved up further this year with trips to better courses like Copper Creek and Silver Lakes – it was actually nice to get back to the crappy-little-bumper-car-course roots that Dennis and I started from. I enjoyed walking that little course today, and it reminded me of when I used to play it and the now-defunct Unionville a few years back when I was just starting out. A good time all around… but next week it’s back up to Hawk Ridge in Orillia and “real-size” courses again!

Incidentally, I have failed to mention two important items thus far this year. One, I am shamed to admit that I am the inaugural winner of the Pink Purse this year, as one of my drives at Parkview failed to clear the forward tees. More importantly, Dennis successfully defended the Valleywoods Cup in his first round of the year, but Croucher has since won it at Parkview by improving his score on the back nine over the worst front nine I’ve ever seenfrom him. An anomaly, I’m sure.

… And Question #21: Can Tiger Make It Past Byron?

1. Favourite Iron – Nine or seven. Big fan thus far.

2. Favourite Wood – I’ve only ever used the Spaldings in my bag, and I’d call my 3-wood my favourite of the two.

3. Favourite Hybrid – Half-human, half-alien Natasha Henstridge in that “Species” movie! Also my Nickent 3DX Ironwood.

4. Favourite Ball – Also left. Otherwise something soft.

5. Favourite Course – I guess probably Seaton, but that’s mostly because I’m comfortable there. I truly enjoy the Upper Course at Parkview more than the Valley, but I’m the only one who does.

6. Worst game ever – Well, that would be my first game ever, four years ago. I hit a 134. Cough.

7. Best round ever – 90, at Parkview. I was the inaugural winner of the Valleywoods Cup with that one.

8. Best putt – Motherfucking Kevin, standing on the edge of the motherfucking green with his motherfucking Crackbery in his hand, sinks a twelve-footer with one hand while gabbing on the phone. The fucker then just smiles, winks and turns away to finish his conversation. I HATE HIM SO MUCH.

9. Longest Drive – I once drove from Florida to Toronto and only stopped to sleep once. My mother was in the car. I still wake up screaming. Also, I’ve never measured, but I’m not long off the tee.

10. Most humiliating moment – I threw my club in anger once, almost killing Dennis. Never again. I had no business being there if that’s what I was going to do.

11. Have you ever dated a cart girl? – No, but have made up inappropriate songs about them to the tune of “When I Was Seventeen”.

12. Have you ever hit anyone with an errant shot? – No. Carl, however, has drilled me with an errant chip off the green right in the face.

13. Why do you play golf? – I really enjoy it. I need the exercise, I like the comraderie, it’s a good “business sport”… and I like nature, when it comes in small doses. I also play to get better.

14. Why don’t you play golf? – I don’t play for money either.

15. Dream foursome – Myself and Boom-Boom with Freddie Couples and Morgan Pressel. Kevin gets to hang with his namesake, and I make up inappropriate songs about Morgan to the tune of “When I Was Seventeen”. [Actually, I'd probably want to play with David Leadbetter strictly for the tips or Ernie Els for the same reason... but not if I had to make up songs about them].

16. Golfer you most like to watch – I really love watching Annika’s swing. I love watching guys like Couples and Furyk bang it out, and guys like Darren Clarke when I get the chance. I think my swing is more like Ernie Els, though, if you can swallow what I mean in that laughable statement, so I watch him closely.

17. There’s a naked Kim Possible? No, there isn’t. Well there is, but it’s cheaply made, and there’s too much nude Ron Stoppable in it, and… I’ve said too much.

18. What you would give up to play a round at a top ranked PGA course – I don’t know. Probably not that much. I’m just not ready for that yet.

19. Do you practise? – Wednesday nights; sometimes Saturdays.

20. If you were to be a Pro golfer, who would you want to play like, and don’t say TW. – Oddly enough, probably Daly – long off the tee and soft-handed around the greens. A second choice is Ernie Els, hands down.

21. Can Tiger surpass Byron’s 11 consecutive wins? – I suspect not, but after the Buick today, God knows.

Top Teachers in the US…

So, BC and I were conversing today at the dome, whilst watching the young Liam have his first golfing lesson, about who would be on the top of the heap in the golfing teachers world.

Click here —>LINK  to see the names that GOLF Digest published as the teachers to have help your game (bring your wallet!!)

On a side note, an aside, if you will, one of the whole subtext genre, if you like, the top names on the list were ones that we, even in our naivete about this world, brought forth as our candidates.

Read, enjoy, dream.

More of those Questions type things, but this time it’s for…GOLF!!!!

So, you must have seen these, or have gotten these annoying things in your email that asks you to answer what seems like an insurmountable number of questions derived solely to either make a pure liar out of you, or to humiliate in front of the masses. Well, thinking caps on folks, because I have created one, with the help of my pally BC, one for the golfer/duffer/hacker/weekend warrior in all of us.

These are not meant to humiliate you, well, just a little, but moreso, they were designed to have some fun with, and to see who can or will come up with the most outlandish ‘true’ (name and address withheld by request) stories from the links.

So, without further adieu, so as not to be put ‘on the clock’ as it were…FORE!!!

1. Favourite Iron -I really like my Betty Crocker steam iron, but for golf, I’m thinking my six or seven.

2. Favourite Wood – Mine is pine. Again, for golf, I have to go with my Taylor Made V-Steel 15 degree 3 wood. I just bought the Sasquatch 3, but haven’t hit it on a course yet.

3. Favourite Hybrid – Have to say my Purefit 25 degree Escape. Don’t really like the Prius, truth be known.

4. Favourite Ball – Left.

5. Favourite Course – No, it’s not Seaton. Of all the courses I have ever played, I have 3 favs. In Canada, I would have to say Silver Lakes. In the US, toss-up between Pinehurst #2, and Shaker Run, and in the rest of the world, the Monty in Dubai and Blue Canyon in Phuket. Yes, I know, that is more than 3, but hey, top 3 and ties.

6. Worst game ever – God, so many to choose from. Probably the 97 I took during a tourney in Bahrain at Riffa. I sucked so bad that day that I thought I would quit.

7. Best round ever – God, so few to choose from. I would have to say the 74 I shot at Riffa with my teacher Scott and the Director of Golf, Michael Braidwood. That was back in the days when I was playing a 7degree Taylor Made SuperSteel driver.

8. Best putt – I will let BC tell you about this one. He was there.

9. Longest Drive – Toronto to Kitchener with my mother in law after being up and travelling for 44 hours.

10. Most humiliating moment – A severly yanked 3 wood off the tee on the Valley course at Parkview when I nearly killed not only BC, but Dennis and Amir too.

11. Have you ever dated a cart girl? – Yes. I will leave it at that.

12. Have you ever hit anyone with an errant shot? – Yes. I drifted a drive right a tad on my father’s course in Kentucky and it bounced off the cart path and hit a lady in the stomach.

13. Why do you play golf? – Not at all sure really. In the old days I thought it was cool, now, I play it now because I am not diving as much and I need a place to re-assemble my brain at times.

14. Why don’t you play golf? – I don’t play golf for the money. Wish I did, but I don’t. Although, I have 6 years to the Senior tour. Do I hear a reality show in the offing?

15. Dream foursome – 2 of them really. Freddie of course, Bobby Jones and Lee Trevino. The second one, Freddie again, my Dad and Gary Player. Freddie for my benefit, and GP so that my Dad has someone his age to talk to.

16. Golfer you most like to watch – I like to watch Fred Couples, but also love to watch Annika and Lorena Ochoa.

17. There’s a naked Kim Possible? – Really?

18. What you would give up to play a round at a top ranked PGA course – My debt.

19. Do you practise? – Not nearly enough. I don’t have the time that I used to, but when I do, I really strive to make it worthwhile time spent.

20. If you were to be a Pro golfer, who would you want to play like, and don’t say TW. – I would love to have Freddie’s tempo, John Daly’s soft hands around the greens, and Fred Funk’s accuracy, and Brad Faxon’s putting ability.
