Boomer’s Bag – end of season update

So, here we are at the end of the season. I actually got to play the last round of the year at Angus Glen this year on the North course. You know, the one that DLIII (Davis Love the Third) re-did for the PGA and the Canadian Open, and then had the balls not to show up. I used to like him, but now? That was low-rent Davis, low rent.

Anyhow, played that day in the cold and rain and here is what ended the season in my bag. Two balls!! HAHAHAHAHAHAH. Ok, so that wasn’t that funny. On to the clubs contents;

Not playing with my Purefit ID Raw any longer. It um, hmm, well, got ‘broken’ and replaced with an MOI Golf Intruder 460  and my DC Tour 450 I sold to a friend. My shaft has changed slightly to an Accuflex Creation 80 Copper Shaft. 45 1/2 inches long and around a XX stiffness. The club is handpicked to 9.25 degrees although it says 9. Also, the backweighting is gone due to the heavier shaft. This club is really nice, and the shaft, at 480CAD and only for the tour, is really something special. Vijay and T. Immelman play these shafts. My grip is the GolfPride New Decade Multi-Compound and as usual, logo down on all my grips.

3 Wood – MOI Golf 15 degrees – Ok, so I switched from my TM V-Steel! Sue me. This club is quite nice and is shafted with an Accuflex Icon fairway woods shaft. Hits very solid, and as you can see, it has a nice look to it as well.

5 Wood – This hasn’t changed, although I am thinking about the 5 wood version of above.

Hybrid – I picked up a couple of Ben Hogan CFT hybrids at Golf Town the other week. They were 58CAD and me, being a club whore bought them. I got the 3 iron and the4 iron versions. They are nice, more of a driving iron than hybrid, but over the winter I will work with them and see. I might, just for the fun of it, cruise Ebay and see if I can’t pick up those Bobby Jones hybrids cheaper than 200 bucks each. I am actually very intrigued by them, and they look nice. So, we will have to wait and see, won’t we??

Irons – 5-PW, Here is where I have changed again. I went to a set of Mizuno MP-60 I still have my 2001 Hogan Apex Plus irons, but since I am actually hitting these sticks somewhat alright, I thought that I would make the switch. Stay tuned to this spot though as a few weeks ago my brother in Florida picked me up a set of Ping EYE2 irons in a garage sale. I am going to re-shaft them, (he broke my 5 iron already) and re-grip them when I go there for Xmas, so, if I play well and they feel fit to me? They might show up in the old Sun Mountain.

Wedges – I have gone to the CG12 wedges by Cleveland. These are the ones with the Zip grooves in them. They are nice, but we shall see. I have a 52 and a 56 degree. I also still carry my 51 Purefit at times, and I am thinking about going back to Purefit for all of my wedges. Not sure, we shall see.

Putter – This is a change. I got my Scotty Studio design re-done and it is back now. I love this putter and will most likely use it for most of the time. I do have an Odyssey White-hot in my stock, and use it sometimes on fast greens, and I still use my Never Compromise but my Scotty is the flat stick of choice. For now. As an aside, BC bought my YES putter, well, bought is such a loose term, he exchanged the Odyssey for it.

Wearing Hi-Tec and ECCO shoes depending on my outfit. Both are very comfortable. BC is wearing Hi-Tec now and I have gotten him into Ecco as well.

I have been using up some golf balls that I had around, but next year, I think that the new NXT Tour and the ProV1x will be my white spheres of choice. Although, the HX Tour is a nice ball too.

As mentioned elsewhere, I am using Golf Pride New Decade Multi-Compound grips for the most part.

Well that’s it for the update, so until my game sucks again forcing a change in equipment,

Keep it in the short grass.

Boomer’s Bag – Updated

So, due to the total lack of cooperation that I am getting from the BC in updating the contents of my golf bag, I thought I would take it upon myself to do so.

Still playing with the Purefit DC Tour 450 with an XS Accuflex Evolution Shaft – 8.8 degrees and 45″ long

3 Wood – Taylor Made V-Steel, S300 True Temper shaft, 15 degrees

5 Wood – Nike Sasquatch 19 degree with a Stiff shaft

Hybrid – 25 degree My Escape by Purefit with an Accuflex HL shaft in X Flex

Irons – 5-PW, Purefit MB1020 Tour Blades – 1 degree upright

Wedges – 51, 55 bent to a 56, 59 degree ID Raw by Purefit

Putter – Studio Design 1.5 by Scotty Cameron

I had a Never Compromise GM2 in my bag for a while, but have decided to go back to my Scotty. If my club guy ever gets the ID Raw Drivers in, then I will go to that with an Accuflex Creation 65 Silver shaft.

Other than that, I love my clubs, and actually like the Nike 5 wood that I am playing. I bought the 3 and 5 at Golftown one day because they were on sale, and kept the 5 and let the BC have the 3. He hit it very well on Sunday as a matter of fact.

Well, that’s what’s in the bag of this moment, but I am bidding on some things on Ebay that might change the complexion this week. Stay tuned GOLF fans.

Golf Training Aids, or… How I am an Advertising Victim

Ok, who of you out there owns a golf training aid in some form or another.

Anyone? Anyone? Bueller? Anyone?

I am sure that most or some or all of us have at one time flicked on the TV to the Golf Channel and have seen the latest and greatest ‘miracle’ product to cure your golfing blues and/or maladies.

Well, I have, and have, and have some more. The following is the training compendium if you will, the training products ‘genre’ of what I currently have in stock.

The Speed Stik – This is endorsed by Vijay, but I am pretty sure he isn’t using it. Might do, but, probably not. I think it is good to use a few times to get some sort of rhythm down, and also to see how fast you swing, but I have to tell you, once it is in your hands, you are going to be swinging like you are trying to drive a 400 yard hole. That isn’t how you should swing, so the results of the speed test will be skewed. I give this a C+ for effort, but you can use the $$ to buy a decent putter.

The Momentus Swing Trainer – Fred Funk, one of the shortest, but most accurate hitters on tour uses this. It has a molded grip to force your hands into a ‘proper’ grip, and it can actually be used to hit balls. Great warm-up tool as it is weighted, but save your money and take an old shaft and put a 2 or 3 pound weight on it. I like the grip, but for me, who has a strong grip, it doesn’t really help. I give this a B+ for a warm-up gadget.

The David Leadbetter Swingsetter thing a ma jig – If you are Nick Price, owner of a very nice, but very quick tempo, buy it. Molded grip like the Momentus Swing trainer, and you can swing it anywhere, but for me, who goes back low and slow, and then rips it, it ain’t cricket. B- if you have a fastswing, C- if you don’t.

The Momentus Power Hitter - 310 gram version – Sean ‘the Beast’ Fister shills this. For those of you who don’t know who he is, he is a 3 time World Long Drive Champion and can really rip the ball a long way. I happen to like this club. You can actually hit balls with it, and it does go a long way in pinpointing where your swing is not happy. If you try and cup your wrists, the club, and your wrists will let you know. So, I give this an A on my ’should i buy it, or should i get a hooker’ scale.

The Stanceminder – Never got the hang of this yet, but will wait to write a review on it until I can get it outside to a grass range. The principle is logical, but I am not sure of the impact on my game. Stay tuned.

The Rick Smith Swing glove – Rick Smith, teacher of Phil FIGJAM Mickleson sells this. I bought it originally because I have a problem with flicking my wrists through impact, and this glove is supposed to help you with that. It does work to a degree, and you will know when are you cupping because the freaking plate digs into your wrist, but once you set your mind to it, it just is a glove with a plastic hinge thingy. I will use it off and on though this year while at ranges and domes as I feel that every once in a while, a reminder might be needed. B- on my scale. (NB. It is an XL for those of you interested in purchase.)

The Medicus Dual-hinge 5 Iron – You know? This actually works and can point out where your swing is breaking down, but you have to stick with it and I didn’t so it is for sale. B on my scale.

Impressive, no? I’m a sucker? yes. Well, to be fair, that 310 gram Driver up there actually does work, and the Swing Glove helps, but they ain’t all cures. Mostly money out the door and into the pockets of people who don’t really need it. I will give myself this though, I went to the Dome last night and used that 310gram Driver for a while, and once I figured out that I only need to swing 85% (like the video says) and that I need to keep my wrists cocked longer than I have been, I hit the shit out of my normal driver. I mean, really folks. the ball was flying off the club and going straight where I aimed it.

So, click on the links and see if what you see is what you think you need, then leave a comment here and I will give you a great deal on the item that you like. All but the driver, that stays…for now.

Till the grass is greener, or BC bugs me to post again,

Keep it in the short grass.
